Residential Meter Stacks and modular metering solution

Reasons for replacing the electric meter

You should replace your electric meter box if you notice any physical damage—such as cracks, dents, or rust—or if there are signs of overheating like burn marks or unusual smells. Frequent electrical issues, including flickering lights or repeated breaker trips, can also indicate that the meter box is failing.

A replacement is often necessary when upgrading your home’s electrical system, adding new high-demand appliances, or if the existing meter box is old and no longer meets current electrical codes.

For safety and accuracy, a professional inspection by a licensed electrician is always recommended to determine the best solution.

Signs that indicate a need for replacement:

Visible Damage:
Cracks, dents, broken doors, or missing hinges.

 Corrosion:

Rust or corrosion on the box's interior or exterior, which can weaken its structure.

Water Damage:
Dampness or water leakage inside the meter box, which can damage the meter and create a hazard.

Overheating/Burn Marks:
Scorch marks, burn marks, or a burning smell around the meter box or electrical equipment.

Frequent Electrical Issues:
Lights flickering, frequent tripping of circuit breakers, or unusually high electricity bills

Obsolete or Outdated Model:
If the meter box is an old design or model that no longer meets current electrical safety codes or standards.

Electrical System Upgrades:
You are making significant upgrades to your home's power system, such as installing a new subpanel, an electric vehicle charger, or increasing your home's overall power demand.

Installing residential meter stacks involves selecting the right product, ensuring compliance with local codes, and following specific installation guidelines for safety and efficiency.

Overview of Residential Meter Stacks

Residential meter stacks are modular metering solutions designed for multi-tenant applications, such as apartment complexes and duplexes. They allow for multiple meter sockets to be installed in a single enclosure, providing a space-efficient way to manage electrical metering for several units.

Residential meter stacks are designed to make multi-tenant metering safe, efficient, and easy to service. Their galvanized-steel enclosures offer strong protection against rust and weathering, giving them long-lasting durability. Because these systems are modular, they can be configured with as many meter positions as a property needs—ideal for duplexes, triplexes, apartment buildings, and other multi-unit installations.

Many modern meter stacks also use fastener-free meter bases, which helps reduce the likelihood of hot spots and improves overall reliability. Separate access panels allow electricians to reach tenant breaker and wireway sections without having to remove or disturb the meters themselves, making maintenance quicker and safer.

Apartment complex panel replacement Costs

Recent projects and expenses

Each and every multi meter price can very greatly and must be evaluated. Any prices are just ballpark from recent jobs.

Electric meter pack upgrades start anywhere around $2,500 for a two hundred amp two-meter section

For a base 400-amp main electric meter panel you should plan on spending $1,200 and up, per meter

Depending on ark fault breakers at $65.00each included, plus taxes, permits and the complexity of your installation.

Other factors the electric contractor will need to consider that can affect the price. are grounding and bonding should it need to be updated.

It's possible you may need ground rods.

We typically charge $200.00 and up for these. 200-amp services require a #4 bond wire to the water line if your home is not Pex and has gas.

This will be a #4 copper wire at $2 dollars a foot plus install.

Typically, most of the rest of the items don't need to be done for a replacement unless additions have been made to the building.

ELECTRIC TRENCH AND CONDUIT

Now the trench and conduit must be bid from the project managers drawing or requirements. 2.5" PVC conduit is usually required with installation and mule tape (pull rope) this tends to be around $20.00 a foot installed.

Trenching starts around $20.00 a foot for trench and backfills on a standard dig depending on how long the run is and how hard the dig is.

THE TRANSFORMER

The transformer is usually outside of the electrical contractors bid and completed between the homeowner and Power company.

ENGENEERING

Some cities require one-line drawings and panel schedules to obtain the permit.

This can add $500 to the bid in some case. All panels are to be properly marked to where each breaker services in the home.

WHOLE HOUSE SURGE PROTECTOR

Most jurisdictions require surge protectors these days and we supply one on every job.

Why Choose Us?

ResArizona

The electric panel is the most important and complicated system in your home. Codes advance every year adding safety to your system. But even more important are the past codes. We have been doing panel changes for over forty years. Long before most current electricians were born. Many things aren't taught these days that were common place in the past and most of todays electricians aren't even aware of such as aluminum wiring, two wire systems, sharing of the neutral wire, discontinued breakers and breakers that have lost there UL listing because of failure. You know as much about these items as most of today's electricians and this is not good. Improper installation of any of these items can create fire hazard or dangerous conditions for the rest of your electrical appliances. Most electric companies rarely do panel changes one or two a year. IT'S ALL WE DO. Over 500 last year alone. Some would think that would make us more expensive but it's quite the opposite. Becuase we are independent electrical contractors buy in volume, have the proper tools and materials for any issue we might run into we do the job in half the time of our competition.
